A Group in Second Life Organizes a Veterans Tribute

Every year on November 11th, America sets aside the day as a remembrance to its veterans and for the third year so too has a group of residents in second life. The group, "SL Veterans Tribute" is currently planning for this year's tribute, which will be begin on Sunday, November 8th and run through Saturday, November 14th. In the note card I received from Jill Mackenzie one of the tributes five coordinators, the group described itself as, "non-political and serves one purpose and one purpose only and that is to honor all the men and women that have given willing of their time to protect the lives we enjoy today". The tribute is organized, funded and built on a purely volunteer basis and will be collecting money for Operation Uplink, which provides pre-paid phone cards for military personnel stationed overseas.

Here's the information on last year's event, which contains photos and a video from the 2008 tribute.

Should you have any questions please feel free to contact any of the Tribute Coordinators listed below:

Avatar Orchestra Metaverse Performs in Orfeo's Oratorio

From: Alizarin Goldflake

Topic: The Avatar Orchestra Metaverse performs in Orfeo's Oratorio

Event date: Saturday, October 31, 11 am PDT

The most unusual Halloween party ever! This combination of talents is not to be missed: a spectacular AVATAR ORCHESTRA METAVERSE performance in Alizarin Goldflake's celebrated ORFEO'S ORATORIO. Limited seating - come early! People are invited to wear their most outrageous costumes and prepare to be astonished by theirs!

The Orchestra is a global collaboration of artists that uses the Second Life platform as an instrument itself. Members conceive, design, and build their own virtual instruments which allow them to trigger independent sounds in real time. Visuals and animations are also included, making a performance of the jumping, hovering, dancing, twirling Avatar Orchestra Metaverse a truly spellbinding event.

Orfeo’s Oratorio is a virtual amusement park with an Upper World/Underworld theme, featuring other-worldly fountains, gondolas, coracles, dance pose balls, a mirror-like floor, blue-jetted ferris wheels, and a mysterious changing light. In the Underworld, where the performance will take place, flames shoot up from the floor, sconces crackle, and the fountain drips particle sparks from the ceiling like a giant chandelier. It was an NPIRL pick:

Virtual Ability Hosts Talk on Mammography

The following information came to me by way of Gentle Heron:

Marymac Dougall will present information about mammography on Tuesday, October 27, from noon - 1 pm SLT. She will be presenting simultaneously in voice and text. This presentation will be held in The Sojourner Auditorium, Virtual Ability Island. Marymac will discuss what mammograms are, their purpose, who would want them, when they should be given, and how they are done. She will bring a "library" that will be available to attendees to get further information about breast cancer. An optional demonstration of breast self-examination (BSE) will be given.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Marymac is a six year breast cancer survivor with a very personal story to share with us. She heads the Breast Cancer Awareness peer support group here in SL. This presentation is open to both men and women. One in 100,000 men will get breast cancer. Anyone with breast cancer, who is at risk, or who is concerned about the possibility of breast cancer, is welcome, as well as those who are family, friends, or caregivers of those with breast cancer.

Lane’s List New Location in Avalon

I've taken a plot of land on the Magna Carta SIM, which is part of the Avalon complex in second life as the new home of Lane's List. As you can see from the picture, the build is complete (my first large scale build in SL). I'm planning for a grand opening event sometime in November, most likely to coincide with the release of chapter six, "Borders of Our Lives". Chapters one through five are available in my new space. The plans are evolving for how I'm going to use the new build, but for right now my office is located there along with the book chapters. Stop on by if you get a moment, would love to hear what you think of the build.

American Cancer Society Benefit Season Kick-Off on Callidora

On Saturday, the 17th of October the owners of Callidora SIM in second life will kick off their annual benefit season for the American Cancer Society. A month ago, I wrote an article that appeared in the SL Newspaper about the brother and sister team, msw Tomorrow and Renfew Sperber, who are active in the annual "Relay for Life" as well as in raising money for the ACS. Ms Sperber sent me the line-up for the event on the 17th along with an e-mail where she told me that the donations were already coming in. Besides the information on the event concert she'd also told me, "that we've dedicated the two most popular rides at the Kleio Island Amusement Park to the ACS, the Spook House and the Alice House, by Atom Burma who is an incredible ride designer".  Kleio Island is adjacent to Callidora.

When: Saturday, October 17th from 2 pm PDT/SLT to 8 pm PDT/SLT

Where: Callidora Beach Concert Stage

What: Halloween Theme Costume Party &

Live Music Benefit for the American Cancer Society

Kick Off 2010 ACS Fund Raising Season

3-4 pm: Beauregard Freenote

4-5 pm: Somewhereintime Jupiter

Please IM Renfew Sperber or msw Tomorrow with any questions. Looking forward to seeing you all on the 17th.

Autumn Writers’ Exhibition in Second Life

The Autumn Writers' Exhibition opened its gates recently; SL's biggest event for writers is in its third year now. As in the past it's open to all writers, providing them an opportunity for display of their work and to take part in events. The exhibition is on Cookie Island and an adjoining island, which had generously been provided by Thinkerer Melville. The exhibition is sponsored by the Written Word group in Second Life. Below are links for the entry points to each exhibit area.

AWE TQ Information Area

AWE Cookie Island Information Area

Be sure to stop over and check out the events and the displays. If you take pictures while visiting be sure to share them on the "AWE Experience on Flickr".

The following came to me by note from Jilly Kidd:

WRITTEN WORD GROUP AWE 2009 COMPETITIONS

3 L$5,000 PRIZES UP FOR GRABS

The Autumn Writers' Exhibition is looking wonderful so it's going to be hard to choose the best display for the L$5,000 prize.

We also have writing competitions, each with a L$5,000 prize. The theme this year is 'Celebration'.

Drop contest entries in the in-tray in Jilly's tent.

THE FIRST LONDON SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM L$5,000 PRIZE FOR A REVIEW ARTICLE

The London School of Journalism is sponsoring a prize contest for the best review of a live event. This should be about a real life live event. It's a prestigious prize as it will be judged by the owner of the London School of Journalism. Entries to my tent along with the others and I'll pass them to the LSJ.

L$5,000 POETRY/LYRIC COMPETITION

L$5,000 FICTION OR NON-FICTION COMPETITION

The competitions are for poetry/lyrics and prose. All entries must be on the theme of Celebration. The prose can be fiction or non-fiction up to 2,000 words, and the poetry can be a poem or song lyric with no limit in length but don't make it a whole book-length poem!

All entries must be received by October 31st. All entries must be your own work. Entries that have appeared on other websites and in other publications will be considered because you can't see too much of a good thing and we believe setting limitations on writers and artists is unfair.

Looking forward to reading them!

The Best of Both Lifes - A Mixed-Reality Concert

For immediate release:

The Best of Both Lifes - A Mixed-Reality Concert

Sunday, October 4, 8:00pm, at The Rockin Man Theater in Second Life, and at the Brainwash Laundromat/Cafe in San Francisco

Second Life band This Device will present a mixed-reality concert, merging the real world with the virtual world. Be at The Rockin Man Theater in SL on Sunday, October 4 at 8:00pm to witness the debut of a Second Life virtual concert being simulcast to a real world club, live, in real-time.

The interactive 3D virtual world Second Life has become a mecca for live music concerts of all types. This Device has been performing in Second Life for two years, and is breaking new ground by taking their virtual show outside the bounds of Second Life into the world of RL nightclubs. Their sound is a mixture of loud guitars, noisy synths, and edgy vocals.

In the virtual world of Second Life, the show is at The Rockin Man Theater, a brand-new venue owned and named after Artel Brando, "The Rockin Man," one of Second Life's best-loved musicians. Virtual lighting technician wizard and builder Dexterito Dexing designed and built the theater, including his signature lighting effects. Now, under the management of Shooting Star Talent Manager Starys Sands, the Rockin Man Theater will host many fine concerts and musicians, beginning in October 2009.

In San Francisco, the concert will be enjoyed by the hip local crowd at the Brainwash, the city's famous laundromat/eatery/music venue. The Brainwash is a busy and popular nightclub that regularly features live music. Information about the club and its schedule can be found at http://brainwash.com.

The Brainwash show will be hosted by GoGirlsMusic.com. GoGirls is a national women-in-music organization that provides support for indie musicians. The San Francisco GoGirls Chapter can be reached at http://www.myspace.com/sanfranciscogogirls.

The concept for this concert is the brainchild of band member Damaris Whitfield, and is one of the key reasons she joined Second Life. This Device is one of a handful of bands who are bringing original progressive rock to Second Life. Their main influences are electronica, punk, and industrial, with large doses of metal and grunge. They've been playing live in virtual clubs since September 2007, and their music is featured on several Second Life radio stations. Band members include Damaris on vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards and production, and Snare Whitfield on drums, vocals, analog syntehsizers, programming, and production. Their music can be heard at http://www.thisdevice.com.

Avatar Repertory Theater Company to Participate in World-wide Event

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A.R.T. COMPANY TO PARTICIPATE IN WORLD-WIDE EVEN

Coventry University presents Avatar Repertory Theater's staging of 13 Objects: Studies in Servitude by Howard Barker as part of an international festival celebrating the work of this prestigious playwright. Performances will be on Oct 20, 4pm SLT and October 21, 2pm SLT at Coventry University SIM:

On October 21, 2009, more than 50 theater companies will stage readings and performances in celebration of the 21st anniversary of the founding of Howard Barker's theater company, The Wrestling School. A.R.T.'s virtual theater will be another facet in the world wide celebration, from Mexico to Iceland, Australia to Cyprus, in five languages. Organizations participating include the Royal Shakespeare Company in London and the Skylight Theatre Company in Perth

Howard Barker's Wrestling School was established in 1988 by actors from the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Court. The name arose from the feeling that the company must 'wrestle' with the ideas in Barker's text before being able to present them on stage.

A.R.T. will be performing "13 Objects: Studies in Servitude" by Howard Barker, live in Second Life, October 20th at 4 pm and October 21st at 2 pm SLT at the Coventry University SIM. 13 Objects shows the secret lives of everyday objects, such as a cup and saucer, or a camera, to make intimate connections and inspire powerful feelings, with poetic language, provocative ideas and dark humor.

The Second Life production is directed by Joff Fassnacht, theatre lecturer at Coventry University, UK. Joff has combined the virtual world with the real world, bringing his students into Second Life to expand and enhance their creative skills. Coventry University was one of the first in the UK to purchase virtual space in Second Life, starting in 2007. Their SIM is used as a creative tool for students, as they work in fashion, design and general business.

Along with the live performances, A.R.T. plans to display an installation featuring scenes from "13 Objects" to allow Second Life residents to wander through the environment and get a feel for this remarkable work. The installation is scheduled to open sometime in October and be up for at least thirty days.

Sets and installation builds will used the remarkable objects built by Arcadia Asylum in 2006 and 2007, currently housed in Arcadia Asylum Library and Museum, curated by Mally McGinnis. Pieces from Arcadia's Slum City and Hobo builds carry out director Joff Fassnacht's vision of "post World War II London blitz post-apocalyptic grunge" with astonishing aptness. A.R.T. Producer Ada Radius commented, "It's as though she (Arcadia) had been reading Barker two years ago."

Cast members/voiceover actors include Kayden Oconnell, Prospero Frobozz, MadameThespian Underhill, Ada Radius, Em Jannings, Mickie Nikolaidis, AvaJean Westland, Rowan Shamroy, Dolgoruky Umarov and Persephone Phoenix. Directed by Joff Fassnacht, sets and costumes assembled by Ada Radius using the designs of Arcadia Asylum. Sound engineering by Thundergas Menges, scripting by Sodovan Torok, Prospero Frobozz and Ian Pahute, animations by Joff Fassnacht, with additional graphics and builds by JubJub Forder and Ada Radius. Admission to the event and installation is free.
