JAZZLIVE in Second Life

"The real and the virtual interact as digital artwork on a monumental scale provides a stunning virtual landscape while real-world jazz gigs, broadcast live from a small London club, are injected into the cyberspace."

Beginning on Friday 6th of November 2009, Partisans open the season live from The Crypt. From 8 pm (GMT) in London and 12 noon in Second Life. Partisans are Phil Robson - guitar (jazz musician of the year 09 Parliamentary Jazz Awards), Julian Siegel - reeds (best instrumentalist 07 BBC Jazz Awards), Thaddeus Kelly - bass and Gene Calderazzo – drums. Since 1996 Partisans has been thrilling audiences with its energetic performances of tightly knit themes and groove-based sound, bridging the gap between New York swing, European improv and UK jam band. The combination of each musician's influences feeds a genuine creative spark generating huge excitement and energy. The concerts will be broadcast live from the Crypt in London into Second Life.

Those attending the concerts in the Second Life venue will also be exposed to great artwork commissioned especially for the events by some of the virtual world's most respected artists; DanCoyote Antonelli, Oberon Onmura and Juria Yoshikawa. Those attending The Crypt will also experience the art show, as it will be viewable on big screens in the venue. This two-way interaction is an essential element in the project.

Also to be screened are excerpts from a forthcoming film about JAZZLIVE by multimedia artist Steve Millar (aka Arahan Claveau).

JAZZLIVE at the Crypt was established in 1995 and quickly gained a deserved reputation as one of the UK's premier jazz venues. Its weekly Friday night concerts have featured the top musicians from London, the UK and Europe, and beyond. JAZZLIVE at the Crypt (situated in the basement of St. Giles Church, Camberwell) continues to break new ground with the JAZZLIVE in Second Life project.

Jazz fans in the UK can of course attend the gigs in person at The Crypt, St Giles Church, Camberwell Church Street, London SE5.

The JAZZLIVE in Second Life Web Site can be accessed from the beginning of November.

The Best of Both Lifes - A Mixed-Reality Concert

For immediate release:

The Best of Both Lifes - A Mixed-Reality Concert

Sunday, October 4, 8:00pm, at The Rockin Man Theater in Second Life, and at the Brainwash Laundromat/Cafe in San Francisco

Second Life band This Device will present a mixed-reality concert, merging the real world with the virtual world. Be at The Rockin Man Theater in SL on Sunday, October 4 at 8:00pm to witness the debut of a Second Life virtual concert being simulcast to a real world club, live, in real-time.

The interactive 3D virtual world Second Life has become a mecca for live music concerts of all types. This Device has been performing in Second Life for two years, and is breaking new ground by taking their virtual show outside the bounds of Second Life into the world of RL nightclubs. Their sound is a mixture of loud guitars, noisy synths, and edgy vocals.

In the virtual world of Second Life, the show is at The Rockin Man Theater, a brand-new venue owned and named after Artel Brando, "The Rockin Man," one of Second Life's best-loved musicians. Virtual lighting technician wizard and builder Dexterito Dexing designed and built the theater, including his signature lighting effects. Now, under the management of Shooting Star Talent Manager Starys Sands, the Rockin Man Theater will host many fine concerts and musicians, beginning in October 2009.

In San Francisco, the concert will be enjoyed by the hip local crowd at the Brainwash, the city's famous laundromat/eatery/music venue. The Brainwash is a busy and popular nightclub that regularly features live music. Information about the club and its schedule can be found at http://brainwash.com.

The Brainwash show will be hosted by GoGirlsMusic.com. GoGirls is a national women-in-music organization that provides support for indie musicians. The San Francisco GoGirls Chapter can be reached at http://www.myspace.com/sanfranciscogogirls.

The concept for this concert is the brainchild of band member Damaris Whitfield, and is one of the key reasons she joined Second Life. This Device is one of a handful of bands who are bringing original progressive rock to Second Life. Their main influences are electronica, punk, and industrial, with large doses of metal and grunge. They've been playing live in virtual clubs since September 2007, and their music is featured on several Second Life radio stations. Band members include Damaris on vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards and production, and Snare Whitfield on drums, vocals, analog syntehsizers, programming, and production. Their music can be heard at http://www.thisdevice.com.

Second Life Residents Present Book to New York Public Library

I received an off line instant message from Nasus Dumart this past week, with an announcement for a mixed reality event. Nasus Dumart and Apple MacKay are the authors of "'The Unofficial Guide to Building Your Business in the Second Life Virtual World" and I'd interviewed Nasus just prior to its release for an article that ran in the SL Newspaper several months ago. We'd had a delightful chat that day about the book, its release and of business in second life. Nasus and Apple are also the owners of Molaskey's Pub, a highly popular live music venue in second life where both are very active in promoting music.

An excerpt from her message follows:

"On Monday August 31st 6:30p (EDT) the New York Public Library, Mid-Manhattan Branch proudly will present 'Virtual Life Lessons' with Jay Mahar and Sue Martin Mahar. In Second Life, Jay and Sue are Apple MacKay and Nasus Dumart of Molaskey's Pub. They will be presenting their book, 'The Unofficial Guide to Building Your Business in the Second Life Virtual World' at the NYPL and featuring Molaskey's Pub during a Second Life live demonstration. If you are in the NYC area, you are welcome to attend in real life! This is a NYPL Workshop, open to the public. It is located at 455 Fifth Avenue at 42nd St. 6:30-8p. 917-ASK-NYPL "

We chatted briefly on my next trip in world about catching up after the event for another interview and I look forward to doing so.
