eMotion Art Contest Announcement at Berliner Kunsthalle Gallery

I'd received this announcement from artist and curator Asmita Duranjaya, a good friend. Her note and information are reprinted below:

Dear friends and artist colleagues,

I am pleased to announce a new art contest. Hanni Fride and Fantazia Enzo have worked for months to build a sim compound including a new gallery, called "Berliner Kunsthalle". It is my honour to curate there changing exhibitions and I would like to start with an art contest on the topic "eMotion". This has two meanings, "electronic motion" and "emotion" in the sense of "moving the mind". Both together should be a guarantee for an attractive artwork. Gallery opening and winner announcement are planned for the 31st of October at 1pm SLT. You have one month to create a new artwork and here are the rules:

1. The artwork has to be new and created exclusively for this specific contest.

2. The topic is "eMotion" in the above mentioned sense.

3. Something has to "move" in the artwork, either animations, particles or through scripts. Flat pictures without movement are not accepted.

4. You can use up to 25 prims.

5. One piece per participant!

6. As usual in my contests there will be a public and a jury panel voting.

7. Send your work with mod, cop, no trans to Asmita Duranjaya. Deadline is the 24th of October 2010 3pm SLT.

8. The exhibition remains in the gallery for 2 months and every artist can try to sell his piece with a commission of 25%.

9. The 1st winner will get 3000, the 2nd 2000 and the 3rd 1000 L$ and every participant will receive a little something.

10. The place is still not available to show an example there, but I have build one with 11 prims on my land:
It shows the average size and my imagination of the topic.

A lot of fun and good luck!

Asmita

Alizarin Goldflake's New Sky Studio Opening Party

Ali's Sky Studio

PRESS RELEASE

From: Alizarin Goldflake

Topic: Alizarin Goldflake's New Sky Studio Opening Party

Event date: Saturday, March 20, 3 pm PDT

Alizarin Goldflake will host a party celebrating her new sky studio on Saturday, March 20, 3 pm PST/SLT. The studio features 6 square galleries for Immersive Art best suited to midnight and two oblong galleries for work best seen in daylight. Each major build has its own dedicated space, but because of the way the doorways between galleries are offset from each other, glimpses of other art invite exploration. Although the studio is now consolidated on one floor, it actually consists of many more square meters.

Immersive Art is the featured genre, but many builds are flanked by the RL drawings that were their inspiration (available in RL at http://www.marthavista.com). A case in point," Acquarella" is surrounded by The Big Pixels drawings recently shown at PiRats.

In the center of the new sky studio is an atrium with an elaborate grillwork dome. The visitor area, with seating, champagne, candles, flowers, and teleporters, is situated below. The gorgeous tropical plantings are courtesy of Juanita DeHaro's WATER,PONDS, RIVERS, WATERFALLS in Svidler.

The land music, classical guitar and flamenco as always, is provided by an iRadio Tunie HUD, available from Zenvendof Zeno, and goes really well with the salsa animation in the dance HUD.

FREE bouquet of lupines to celebrate the first day of spring!

I make several different kinds of art in SL. My main form is Immersive Art, so-called because the viewer is meant to enter the work either by avatar or camera. The art is made of nested prims, digital textures, and scripts. Many of the builds have poses and sounds in them. The point of the art is the kaleidoscopic interaction of the textures, as well as the different moods expressed in the pieces. Some of the sculptures emit extra-large particles, which are actually highly-detailed digital drawings.

The RL Digital Drawings are done just like traditional drawings except that I use digital tools, including a software program called Corel Painter 11 and a pressure-sensitive digitizing tablet and stylus. As I draw, the tablet and stylus electronically translate the motions of my hand into strokes that look as though they were made with the drawing tool I have selected (charcoal pencil or pastel, for example). I see these strokes occurring real-time on my monitor. Jpgs of the very large drawings are imported at 1024x1024 into SL.

2-D Digital Collages are made in RL based on a creative approach I discovered making art in SL. The approach is called process art, and the main characteristic of it is the fact that the end result is not envisioned at the beginning but arises spontaneously from the process of combining and composing visual elements.

Musical Kinetics are a collaboration between artist Alizarin Goldflake and musician Flivelwitz Alsop. The series was inspired by the art and music of five Asian countries: China, Japan, India, Tibet, and Mongolia. Amazingly, the complex compositions were all created with the little 10 second sound loops that SL allows. Walk up close to each piece to activate the music. These pieces are essentially 3-D collages using textures, scripts, and particles.

Kinetic Sculpty Art is 3-D art made from sculpty line drawings embellished with particles and scripted textures.

Regardless of the form. each piece of my art comes from and is intended to share an experience of visual , emotional, and spiritual intensity.

Artis Gallery Exhibition Opening

PRESS RELEASE

From: Marly Peapod

Topic: Artis' New exhibit

Event date: Sunday, September 20th at 12:00 PM SLT

Location: Artis Gallery

Patrick Cournoyer's Artis group is proud to present its new exhibit featuring four promising artists, three for whom it will be either a first or a second show, thus continuing its tradition of discovery. It is my honor and pleasure to introduce them.

InsideOut Clip "Steins, NM"

InsideOut Clip is a photographer from Georgia who traveled across America many times with her husband, an over the road driver, often taking pictures out of the window of his big rig at 55 miles per hour. One such picture, of the Hood River in Oregon, won her first place in a photography contest.

She will be sharing with us a collection of her black and white photographs representing Steins, New Mexico. A once prosperous mining town which was suddenly abandoned when the Southern Pacific Railroad company announced they would no longer deliver water and that the train station would be closed. When they offered to relocate the habitants of the town, the majority left, leaving most of their belongings behind.

This is InsideOut's first exhibit in Second Life™.

June Clavenham "Two"

June Clavenham is a multifaceted artist who's always evolving, finding something new to try, to learn. She has worked with oils as well as photography and, five years ago, she discovered digital painting. "Digital art grew on me as a new and innovative way of [expression], mainly based on fractals, and using different software to bring shapes and colors to a new dimension." "I think digital art presses for a new point of view, since it is created in a nontraditional way, and can be seen in a different media." June Clavenham also says her art "just is... and it's up to the ones who look to give a meaning [to what they see]" She only started recently to explore movement and dimensions in SL.

Living in Uruguay, she is inspired by the colors and scenery of its countryside as well as by emotions, the human mind and by boundaries; the ones we put on ourselves.

This is June's second exhibit in Second Life™, and her selection represents the evolution in the exploration of possibilities, as well as an evolution in the concept of "virtual art".

MariaLouisa Muircastle "Heat of the Moment"

MariaLouisa Muircastle is a computer graphic artist who works with different applications, like Poser, Vue and Photoshop, to create 2D/3D images. Mainly focusing on people, she says she is inspired by the world that surrounds her, always keeping her eyes open to it. Dance is also a major influence, since she is a ballroom dancer in real life.

Born and raised in southern California, but now living in North Carolina, MariaLouisa started doing computer graphics about five years ago when she had been trying to make images for an history website she was a member of for many years. Mostly self-taught, she still strives today to better her skills.

This is MariaLouisa's second exhibit in Second Life™ and it will be focusing on strong women in moments of emotion.

Olli Inglewood "Monochromatic"

Olli Inglewood bought his first camera in November 2008. Since then, he has bought two more, sold one of his shots for a CD cover, found an agent and he even has a photography book in progress. Entirely self-taught, the rapidity with which he has found success is an affirmation of his talent and of his vision.

"To take a photograph is to capture a moment and tell a story, this is what motivates me. You have to respect what you photograph, especially human beings, this is why I do not take exploitive pictures of the female form, I prefer a different approach." He is inspired by Paris, its people, emotions and he has a soft spot for classic dancers.

This exhibit, representing his little monochromatic world, is Olli's third exhibit in Second Life™.

Come Be a Part of an Artists' Colony!

This note came to me by way of Fractal Artist and good friend Serenity Questi:

“Ever thought of having an art gallery of your own? Just to the north, west, and northwest of my gallery here in the Triphosa region here on the mainland there are 6 parcels of land for sale of various sizes and prices. I'm not the owner. But there are now three galleries here in the area. Mine (LM attached), Daines Imperial Art Gallery, and Van's Photos & Stuff. We'd love to turn this into an artsy region and benefit from each other's traffic, so check it out!”

When you arrive using the landmark above you will see the first floor filled with art work. On this floor and above many of the art sculptures are interactive - they react to avatar presence by making sounds or rezzing something as part of the presentation. Consider walking closer - if you just cam around you will give you only part of the effect our artists have created.

After you examine the first floor, please walk up the staircase. Each step has an art work made by the artist whose name you see on the step. Clicking on a step will give you information, bio, and artists' statements.

Once you reach the top of the stairs you will enter our Events area. This is where the Opening Event will be held on July 11th. This is a very unusual event area - the whole room is designed specifically for this show by one of the most acclaimed SL artists, Glyph Graves. He is well known for making beautiful, vibrant, unusual installations. For the Soleil he created not just a room - it is a different world. Again, I strongly suggest walking in as opposed to camming up - you will see how being inside affects your mood and feelings.

To emphasize this effect, during the opening, July 11th, we will enjoy a very special performance by AldoManutio Abruzzo, an amazing professional musician (Dennis Moser in RL) known for his music improvisations. He visited the events area and agreed that this wonderful art installation will inspire him to play something special - his music will be the 37th art piece of the show, only existing for one hour. He is generously donating his performance to AngelGate Arts to support the future of creating art events like the Soleil.

The opening celebration will be continued by another live music performance. Edward Kyomoon sings rock music and love songs ranging from the 60's to the present, covering bands and artists such as the Doors, Pink Floyd, Blue October, Snow Patrol and Nine Inch Nails. He also shares his own original music. He will perform from 11AM till Noon. His concert is another generous donation to support Angelgate non-profit organization art programs.

Don't hesitate to contact me should you require any further information.

Curator.

Calling All Fractal Artists

Serenity Questi, Second Life artist and good friend sent the following announcement to her group:

There's a false perception that fractal art doesn't constitute "real" art because it is generated by software. But fractal artists know that there are a diversity of styles out there, even though many artists use the same programs. So let's show the world the artistry behind fractals!

AI Gallery will be hosting a 6 week exhibition starting mid May entitled "Fractal Diversity", and we need as many fractal artists to participate as possible in order to demonstrate our unique styles!

The number of prims available to each artist will depend on the number of artists who choose to participate. We want to limit scripts to limit lag. The exhibit will be well promoted, and there will be an opening party.

You may sell your work if you wish, but the favor of a donation to AI Gallery's tip jar for every sale will be greatly appreciated.

Please contact me as soon as possible if you'd like to participate, and spread the word to all your fractal friends!

"My Private Supermarket" Multimedia Installation

I received an invitation from my good friend and artist Myth Guyot to the "My Private Supermarket" Multimedia Installation exhibition. If only TP's worked in RL. The exhibition is in Frankfort, Germany. It's a town I'd visited in RL, three times while on business and I've yet to run into a glass of beer I hadn't liked. Sorry for the slight digression, most people know me as a scotch drinker but I do enjoy a cold beer every now and then, especially when visiting or working in Germany.

So, back to the exhibition, which has already opened is located at Gallery Eulengasse 65 . 60385 Frankfurt, Germany, and began on the 8th of August and runs through the 24th with the Finissage and presentation of the catalogue on Sunday the 24th of August 2008, 3 - 7 pm (2 – 6 PM GMT)

Haike Rausch (Laksmi Giha) and Torsten Grosch (Myth Guyot) work together on art projects under the name of 431art in both real and second life. I've written about the Amazing Maze (SL Newspaper) they'd created at their site in SL and about their Machinima film "Walk to Elea!" in Lane's List. Later today, at the exhibition, video and Machinima short films by 431art will begin at 9:00 PM on the 15th of August (8:00 PM GMT).

Myth was kind enough to offer me the following translation about "431art" and the exhibit by Martin Doll, Media critic:

Haike Rausch and Torsten Grosch have been working together on art projects under the name of 431art for more than ten years. They understand their work as experiencing the phenomena and proceedings of nature, work situations and everyday political - social realities. Through their estrangement of the common view, their gaze on familiar objects breaks the habitual patterns of perception. In so doing; they take away the supposed inherent quality, of being real, from what is considered self-evident.

As prowlers between the different expressions of art, 431art often blurs aesthetic reception. They play with different categories of work often irritates the observer, the spectator experiences estrangement, an inability to classify, a puzzlement of everyday phenomena, experienced now as something new and totally different in the form of an art work.

In individual art shows the confrontation between graphic, photographic, film and sonographic elements is for example expressed by oscillating between these various forms of artistic expressions. Graphic art serves alternatively as standalone pieces, sketches of conceptual works or merely as descriptive panels. This creates a very vivid dialogue with the viewer and the objects on display.

In instances where Grosch and Rausch allow their artistic exploits to be experiment instructions, as seen in the concept for Ripenings, their art is turned into an experiment between science and non-science. Or rather between science and art. In this particular concept they explore the effect musical waves have on the growth of bean sprouts.

This experiment, which likely has its professional sceptics, aims to be a challenge to the logical and rational thought processes, it understands itself to be a provocation to the positivistic methods taken to explain our world. The demarcation line between art and science illustrates the very potential the ephemeral offers; the resounding, the wave, in so doing it sensitizes the observer to a scientific-artistic way of looking at the transient. In this sense the results of this experiment are not only natural science relevant but they also have dual impact as an artistic and tactile sensation. This form of aesthetic construction of the non-material is undertaken in; I'll be your substitute whenever you want me – an art project in the virtual space of Second life. In an age where seemingly everything can be digitalized (from human interaction all the way to very private spheres of reality) 431art tackles the way we perceive reality and identity.

The virtual environment combines Plato's allegory of the cave – the classical western philosophical image, which encapsulates the dilemma, between being and appearance – through the visualisation of labyrinthine formations. The tension between immersion and distance has an epistemological implication for the virtual and the supposedly real plain of perception. The structure of the work itself is a labyrinth, which mixes up various levels of real life representation. The aesthetic interferences between audio, video, the source code of the first Second Life Viewers, the avatar and the observer, sitting at his or her computer, creates a metaphorical field of analysis for the questions of authorship and personality, within an online existence. In this dense matrix the user must grapple, in his quest for a stable identity, with mirror images of himself and his environment. Confronted with a virtual doppelganger and the software created environment the user is directed towards cognition of the entire digital parallel universe.

With My private supermarket 431art opened a small shop, in the display window a shelf with jam jars was on show. The exhibition room at first glance seems to be a mixture between a modern convenient store and a quaint corner store. However upon closer inspection it becomes obvious that the goods on offer are by no means limited to commodities. On one wall cryptic handwritten texts are projected, show cases featuring butterflies with rather strange costumes of interwoven typographic structures. A video screen shows a bumblebee, as it assiduously flies from blossom to blossom ticking off it's shopping list. Even the jars on offer contain everything but ordinary jams. The labels on the jars do not only give information about their contents but additionally allude to the methods and essence in which the contents were harvested: Happiness-Harvest, Spontaneous-Harvest, spontaneous planned harvest, coincidentally saved harvest, intuitive harvest.

My private supermarket moves at the same time between various different subject fields. The various exhibits, with their different thematic aspects, cover the length and breath of today's marketplace with its organic food and to a large extent the lost culture of self-reliance. It picks up on the increased homogenization of the world of commodities, the loss of small individual shops and finally with the gathering as a leisure activity the means of survival. The strange labels do not, as is common practice, tell of the final product but instead tell the observer about instances of intuition, spontaneity and chance, which have determined the contents of the jars. On a different level of introspection within the institution of art, the question is raised - is there a reciprocal relationship between artifacts that are for sale and if so, what is the relevance of process and experimental projects. Accordingly 431art "leaves" the exhibition space by unexpectedly accosting the public in the social services office across the road where the only commodities that are not for sale are offered to the visitors in the form of jam-spread bread. Due to this temporary intervention of a kind of non-place, the socially regulated care system is confronted with the unconditional art of giving.

In their exhibition as with many other projects of 431art the ephemeral is stressed –consequently following through the orders of management – by the subsequent closure of the shop.
