Day One - Concert to Benefit Autism

Day one of the benefit concert for autism kicks off at 11:00 am SLT at Nottoo Hot and runs until 9:00 PM today. The organizers have lined up some of SL's top performers for entertainment. Collection kiosks are available for your donations to this cause.

I'd found out about "Gazooky" while in second life, a group notice from the Written Word group had arrived with a note card announcing a writing contest along with LM for the SL site. I opened the note card, quickly read it and then moved the LM to a folder before TP'ing over.

When the site rezzed, I found it to be an average build for a commercial site and I wandered in to look around before taking a note card with some additional information. I was about to leave when avatar braceyourself Bravin arrived and we begin a text chat. As it turned out he is a member of the development team and explained some of the background on the product along with walking me through a demonstration of a document he'd produced using the tool. The tool allows you to create a multi format document, to include text, audio and pictures in it. Documents can be stored and shared on the site.

After returning to my place on Book Island, I launched a browser window and took a look at the web site. The cost is free for new accounts, however you are limited to approximately thirty or so paragraphs. Paid accounts get you more space. Documents can be stored and shared on the site. I did create an account, downloaded and installed the client reader. I've yet to create anything using the tool but am planning to shortly and will let you all know what I discover.

Road to Success Sculpture

At the invitation of White Lebed, I headed over to take a look at her piece created for the SL5B celebration. "Road to Success", is the title of her work. The creator explained to me that it is an ever evolving piece, much as the road to success is ever evolving. Tonight is the last night to view it, the SL5B celebration ends tomorrow morning. Lane’s List Redux

Over the last several months as I've traveled and explored SL, I have shared with my readers the ordinary and extraordinary places and people I encountered there. Since the inception of Lane's List, I have met some of SL's most talented and creative people and I've visited a host of sites, from captivating gardens, to affable and welcoming coffeehouses, classic ballrooms, stylish art gallery's and neighborhood gin joints.

Until now, the travelogue has been exclusively about SL. Within the last few months, after having been invited to participate in several virtual communities, I've decided to expand Lane's List into "a personal travelogue of people and places in virtuality". Second Life, which had opened a vista of a virtual existence for me will continue to be my home base. I am planning to explore other virtual worlds, some directly through a presence and others by proxy through those I have meet in the several expanding business and social networks that I have joined.

As I did when starting Lane's List, I look forward meeting new people and seeing new places. And in sharing it all with the my readers.

Monday 30th June sees the launch of a novel experiment in Ten Cubed, the contemporary art gallery in Second Life run by the Haydn Shaughnessy gallery (www.galleryica.com). For the month of July the gallery will be showcasing street painting from artist Rod Tryon of the United States in conjunction with other contemporary art from established gallery artists."We see street painting has a tremendous following with events like the one upcoming in Palo Alto attracting as many as 150,000 people. So although we are a conventional gallery we can't ignore what attracts and engages people. We're really happy to cooperate with Anthony Cappetto and streetpainting.tv to put street art on the gallery and let people judge its merits alongside some great contemporary art." - Haydn Shaughnessy

A Brief History of the Traditional Street Painting Art Form:

“Street painting is truly an art form that is able to reach people and has done so for centuries going back to its roots in Sixteenth Century Europe, especially in Italy, in which the Madonnari (street painting artists) would travel from town to town following the plentiful Holy Days (holidays) to draw images of the Madonna and religious subjects as their means of expressing their art and earning their living.

The Second World War seriously affected the livelihoods and numbers of the Madonnari, and the art form nearly died out, although there were some itinerant Madonnari seen performing their art in Europe in the late 1960’s by American artists. In 1972 street painting art was revived in the founding of the Incontro Nazionale dei Madonnari in Grazie di Curtatone, Italy. The first street painting festival in North America was the I Madonnari Festival of Santa Barbara in 1987 and continues to this day with as many as 400 artists and young people working on street paintings each Memorial Day weekend at the end of May. Today there are many dedicated street painting festivals in North America and in Europe bringing thousands of street painting artists and fans worldwide together to celebrate the art form and provide local support in their communities for arts education and activities.

Some of the best known and respected festivals in the USA are the Italian Street Painting Festival by Youth in Arts in San Rafael, CA, The Annual Lake Worth Street Painting Festival in Lake Worth, FL, and the I Madonnari Festival in Santa Barbara, CA. Newer festivals with a strong future ahead of them are the Festival Bella Via in Monterrey, Mexico, and a growing number of street painting festivals in Canada, the Netherlands, France, Belgium as well as exhibitions in Japan and Hong Kong.” – Anthony Cappetto

Recent Developments:

A recent development in the street painting art form in the twenty first century is the use of user generated video, blogging, and podcasting of street painting artists at all levels of ability and their fans worldwide. This new technological advance offers opportunity for all street painting, artists, festivals, and fans to allow a window not only to their latest image or festival appearance but a chance to let others know why they street paint and to encourage others – especially the younger generation of street painters to become known and grow in experience. Reaching the public in this way allows the performance aspects of street painting to be shared with many who do not readily have the opportunity to see street painting in person.

Our experiment will take the advances in technology even further as we have the opportunity to introduce this traditional art form performed on the asphalt and pavements of the world into not only the environment of a fine art gallery but in to the many new possibilities offered by Web3D.

In World and Out World?

The concept of what is or isn't "InWorld and OutWorld" is being explored by the artist comet Morigi in her new exhibit.

"The inworld is NOT the opposite to Real Life BUT rather a type of Real Life. Why don't you say OutWorld instead of Real Life (RL)? Otherwise, you will lose the reality of why you do art inworld. Here in this work, you will see why you should call it OutWorld, not Real Life.

Inworld, everything is made of pictures. The ground and the sky, every creature, houses, clothes, our bodies, everything. You terrain-edit as if you are painting with a brush on the ground.
